NEWS: Billy Bob Thornton is New FREDDY KRUEGER!

According to imdb.com, Michael Bay's treasure trove studio Platinum Dunes has not only forged ahead with the balls to remake Wes Craven's classic film Nightmare on Elm Street - they've gone ahead and secured Billy Bob Thornton as the charred, claw-carrying ex-pedophile who spits witty repartee while slitting innocent throats. Slated for a tenuous 2010 release date, the new visit to Elm Street will be inked by Wesley Strick (Wolf, Cape Fear, Arachnophobia) based on the original characters created by Craven some 25 years prior. As of now, no imminent director is attached. Interesting to note; the man universally synonymous with Freddy Krueger - Robert Englund, has no apparent involvement in this new version. However, Englund has lent his blessing and support of the casting decision regarding Thornton, adding the eccentric actor is an "excellent choice" for the role. He continues, saying "a big budget should mean the film will look a lot better than some of the old movies." True that, for Michael Bay maybe artistically shallow, but one thing's for sure - his pockets aren't.
Final Word: Kind of stunned here to be honest. I like Billy Bob a whole lot, and like many believe him to be one of the preeminent actors working today. But ever since Bad Santa, they guy has made one dubious choice after another regarding what types of movies he plays in. I mean, Mr. Woodcock, School for Scoundrels, The Astronaut Farmer, The Alamo? Come on Billy, time to get back to One False Move, Sling Blade and The Man Who Wasn't There kick-ass type material. Really though! One the other hand, if there's one truly offbeat rogue who can channel legit insanity, a la Ledger-Joker - hopefully it's Thornton who can bring an outlandish interpretation to Krueger that subverts the all too familiar hackneyed Michael Bay production level. Guess we'll see!

What the? Unbelievable! It's not that I don't think Thorton is capable of handle the role of Krueger--he probably is--this news is just surprising. I would have figured they'd replace Robert Englund with some less recognizable actor.

I think Tobin Bell woul've been a great fit. He looks like Englund, and is not widely known as billy bob. He has a much better creepy voice than old bob.

Yeah this sucks. The writer has no cred. Doom, Wolf, Cape Fear, man I hate all those movies. Arachnophobia isn't good, but Jeff Daniels is good in the movie. Michael Bay? C'mon... throw this shit out the window or hand it over to someone else.

Robert Englund has said in interviews that he's "too old" to play Freddy, which is a crock of shit if you ask me. He played only 5 years ago, in Freddy vs Jason no less--the most physically demanding and stunt filled Freddy movie yet. And it's not like Mr. Englund is not still doing movies, he was just in Hatchet (2006), Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (2006), Zombie Strippers (2008) and a bunch more that haven't been released yet.

This news of Billy Bob makes me sad. I also think Tobin Bell would have been a good pick, as would keeping Englund, if this movie MUST be remad. However I am not a fan of this remake what-so-ever.

This is ridiculous! An absolute travesty to not only Wes Craven and his wonderful characters but to the loyal fans of the NMOES series. Haven't you don't enough damage to the horror movie making industry hollywood?
People!!!! Please stop whining about Billy Bob!!! This is a remake. A re-telling of a great story. Imagine when you hear a story for the first time along with a group of other people. How you vision it is completely different from the person next to you. Michael Bay isnt trying to change anything, he's producing his own version of how he pictures the story. Completely healthy. Billy Bob would be great as a Freddy. No, it wont be the same as Robert Englund, but that's good. I love Robert. He is Freddy as we all know Freddy to be. Let's see if Billy Bob can carry the torch in this version of the next Nightmare. Give it a chance.
