NEWS: Internet Says "NO!" to Freddy Remake

Feb. 25 8:17 PM by Eater of Entrails

A heated discussion amongst horror fans has arisen after Blood-Disgusting.com posted their 15 Reasons for Remaking A Nightmare on Elm Street. In the comments section below the article, many fans of the original film openly state their thoughts on the recently announced remake of Wes Craven's 1984 horror film, a majority of which call the upcoming remake an absolute mistake.

Fans speak out about how the only thing worse than a shit-stained horror remake is a shit-stained horror remake starring a douchlord like Ashton Kutcher.

Fans speak out about how the only thing worse than a shit-stained horror remake is a shit-stained horror remake starring a douchlord like Ashton Kutcher.

This discussion comes up after Robert Englund, the actor who played the film's iconic clawed child murderer in the first film as well as every Nightmare sequel to date, revealed in an interview with BadTaste.it that he will not be reprising his role as Freddy Krueger because he feels like he's "too old for this new version, otherwise it would be Freddie vs. Viagra..."

In the comments section of Bloody-Disgusting.com's article, user DeathtoPlatinumDunes states that the remake is "just a cynical cash grab from the souless hollywood remake factory, and I for one will not contribute a red cent to these fuckers."

Another user, halloweenfan, brings up the rather disappointing history of horror movie remakes that plague the genre, claiming that all remakes do is "squirt piss in the original's face."

Rocky Horror provides their own list of 15 reasons why the remake shouldn't be done, ending their reasons with a plea to filmmakers: "Do not rape another classic horror icon."

Even though there are quite a few horror fans who are furious that such a highly regarded horror film is being reworked, not everyone is in agreement that remaking A Nightmare on Elm Street is unnecessary or even a bad idea, such as theking185 who notes that "we got a taste of what the prequel could be like from the beginning of Freddy vs. Jason and if it's anything like that it would be awesome."

Final Word: Remakes are a touchy subject, especially to horror fans. Today the genre is bloated with remakes, and while there have been some decent remakes in the past (Dawn of the Dead, Texas Chainsaw Massacre) and even some great ones (The Fly, The Thing), the vast majority of horror remakes and "re-imaginings" are mind-blowing in their wretchedness (The Wicker Man, The Fog). When the 1998 remake of Psycho starring Vince Vaughn was announced, I wanted to push my dining room table out of the window of my 6th floor apartment. It's true that it is somewhat difficult to imagine the remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street turning out to be a better film than the original, but you never know, it may be enjoyable on some level (or maybe even improve upon certain aspects of the first film). I'm just not so sure I can make the absurd claim that there are 15 strong reasons to remake such a timeless horror film.

The original made me pee my pants when I was little.

You too?

The first death scene in the 1984 original is truly masterful. The sound work, Rod's reaction, the balls of Craven to not cutaway, all sublime. The idea of remaking it, especially with Ashton Douchlord, is probably the worst notion since Forest Whitaker decided to direct Hope Floats!

Thanks for the kind words supernaturaldjc!
You're right about some sequels handing the material right, such as TCM and Halloween. So hopefully the Freddy remake falls into the right hands.

I can see an awsome prequle to Freddy but no way should they do a remake of it with out Robert Englund!

Once there is an actual script Robert Englund will sign on. He just wants big $$ b/c he knows it will do well and getting all of us to whine and say we won't see it w/o him means he gets a bigger paycheck.

Who cares what they remake or not? I have faith after seeing Rob Zombies Halloween, that this CAN be cool. The ONLY Nightmare on Elm-street movie that was any good was the first one, the rest were really bad, cheesy, trying to be funny (but not) pieces of crap.
So I would rather have a thousand remakes, then endure another Robert Englund, has to say something funny and cutsie before every kill hunk of shit movie........Robert Englund is also a terrible actor, just terrible, . . how about some GOOD actors in there? Filmmakers are better on average nowadays, and I betcha if they go really dark and serious, you'll all be eating your words.
