Frog baby's underrated gem of the month goes to a little exploitation flick called Vice Squad. While not a horror film proper, Wings Hauser's badass villain Ramrod (yes, that's his name) ranks right up there with the likes of any a horror great. He's brutal, he's vicious and unabashedly relentless. Director Gary Sherman (Raw Meat, Dead and Buried) centers his film on a prostitute known as Princess (Season Hubley), whom, after being treated like chewed up dog meat by her pimp (Wings), decides the only way to earn respect is to teach the man a lesson. After a sting operation fails, Princess goes on a blood soaked revenge path; stopping nowhere short of slaying her "employer" once and for all. Only Ramrod has other plans. Once tipped of the situation, Ramrod becomes more and more psychotic, searching the streets of L.A. for Princess. He's out for blood!
F*** Tarantino/Rodriguez's homage (one I enjoyed), this is the real grind-house type of filmmaking that pervaded the industry in the late '70s-early '80s. Shot entirely on location (save for two scenes), the film is offensive, non-PC, and completely unredeemable. In other words, a near perfect film! Gritty, bloody, funny, campy, and loaded with some solid action sequences...Vice Squad is an underappreciated winner!
Top 3 Moments
-When Fred Berry, better known as Rerun on the '70s TV show What's Happening!!, who plays an overweight grape eating pimp (credited as Sugar Pimp), gets savagely castrated by Ramrod, in his own apartment no less.
-Ramrod, dissatisfied by one of his lady employees, decides to let her know how he feels by jamming a coat hanger up the girl's gender region. Forget wood, we're talking steel!
-How could the opening and closing theme song go unmentioned? Sung by Wings himself, "Neon Slime" is undoubtedly one of the funniest/cheesiest 80s film anthems. Check out Ramrod in all his glory below!
