Reuters reports that horror director Eli Roth, known for his tremendously grisly films Cabin Fever and the Hostel series is making "a movie that 13-year-old kids can see." Although the exact film project Roth is working on has yet to be revealed, he notes that it'll be in the vein of Transformers and Cloverfield, also confirming that his upcoming family-friendly movie will indeed be rated PG-13.
The director goes on to explain his departure from the horror genre saying "I feel like I pushed the violence in R movies about as far as I can push it. I feel like I'm bled out. I wanna switch it up." The article doesn't mention anywhere whether or not Eli Roth is still planning on adapting Steven King's recent zombie novel Cell, but it's a bit discouraging due to the fact that he has been relatively silent about the film since announcing it two years ago.
Final Word:Roth has taken a lot of heat over the last couple of years, mainly in the form of the media criticizing his work bashing it as nothing more than "torture porn," which is complete horse shit. Perhaps he's grown weary of people attacking his films for no reason other than their abundance of gore. Whether his change in direction truly stems from any real reason, fans of Roth's previous films shouldn't worry too much because... hey, horror directors often make deviations. Remember, Romero made crap like Knightriders (the one about medieval jousters on motorcycles). Carpenter made Memoirs of an Invisible Man. Just let Roth get it out of his system and hope that he'll return with Cell, Trailer Trash, and Hostel III (a guy can dream, right?).

What a slap in the face to horror fans (spits)
If he pumps out some prom night 2 garbage ever horror fan is going to abandon him. I hope he doesn't sell out but considering what other directors have done (like wes craven) I wont be all that surprised. Please Mr. Roth, don't douse us with more retarded horse dung like Boogeyman! PLEASE!
I completly agree with monkey fish and was going to bring up craven also. Crap like the curse is unforgivable, i mean the goddamn werewolf gave the middle finger.
Wtf? Maybe it's a red herring, and he just wants to separate the superfans from the fence-sitters. Or an identity crisis perhaps, feeling like if he doesn't get out of the genre now, he'll never be given the chance to exhibit a range and diversity. Remember, Carpenter did Starman, a little sappy I know, but you can't question Bridges' performance or Carpenter's ability to do something different. But no word on Cell? That licks crack!
So "In the vein of Transformers or Cloverfield" ... alien invaders, I guess? Nothing necessarily wrong about PG-13, as long as he isn't shitty about it. The problem with movies like Boogeyman and Prom Night isn't that they're PG-13, it's that they're terrible.
Anyway, I can see how making two Hostels and Cabin Fever would take the piss out of a dude for a while. Let 'im enjoy his success.
while i agree that Roth shouldn't make crappy fuckin' horror flicks now, I woiuld like to see what else he is capable of. If he's switching it up completely, maybe it won't be horror at all. If he can create a great flick that isn't horror then more power to him.
Everyone here has brought up very good points. I do agree with KouAidou that just because it will be PG-13 doesn't mean it will suck, oftentimes alien movies are PG-13. But I also think that most PG-13 horror movies usually turn out terrible in return for a larger audience. But I agree with killatron most of all, The Curse WAS horrendous. Oh how I used to love Wes Craven :[
Well, I loved Cloverfield and, I'll admit it, I thought Transformers kicked ass. I think Roth cares too much about the horror genre to actually leave it and I think he'll do an excellent job with this scifi project of his. I'm looking forward to it!
