REVIEW: Frontier(s)

May. 9 2:50 PM by Eater_of_Entrails

Hostel meets Texas Chainsaw Massacre in Frontier(s), a viciously gruesome French horror film about several young anarchists who, after fleeing the mayhem that has broken out in Paris, come across a cannibalistic family of neo-Nazis. Despite the movie's flaws, French director Xavier Gens delivers one of the year's bloodiest and best horror movies that, in addition to packing more than enough gore to satiate the taste buds of any horror enthusiast (so much so that the film is rated NC-17), also includes a well placed political subtext.

Frontier(s) has some of the foulest gore we've seen is a long time.

REVIEW: Zombie Strippers!

May. 7 11:14 AM by Blood_Bather

It seems the horror genre has long been a refuge for mega porn-stars desperate to cross over into the mainstream. Sure, it makes sense, especially since many a provincial mind consider horror films one short step above porno films to begin with. Besides, quite a smooth transition it is; instead of screwing some stiff to death, now you're actually out to kill them (or simply avoid being killed by them). We saw it in the late '80s early '90s with Traci Lords, who broached commercial filmmaking with such genre fare as Not of This Earth, Shock 'Em Dead, The Tommyknockers, etc. Ginger Lynn Allen (Buried Alive, The Devil's Rejects) is another immediate example. Now Jenna Jameson picks up the torch, doing all she can to keep her flame burning bright in Jay Lee's incompetently silly Zombie Strippers!

Damn, No Wonder Miss Jameson Quit The Porn Game

REVIEW: Mother of Tears

Apr. 30 11:56 AM by Eater_of_Entrails

After 31 years, renowned Italian horror filmmaker Dario Argento finally completes his Three Mothers Trilogy with the third entry in the series, Mother of Tears. While the new movie has its share of extremely graphic scenes and features some genuinely chilling imagery, ultimately the movie isn't half as well made or even enjoyable as Susperia (1977, the first installment in the trilogy) or Inferno (1980, the second installment), and will likely disappoint both fans of the series and those who have never seen an Argento film.

As impressively grisly as it is, Mother of Tears is one of the weakest films in Argento's filmography.

REVIEW: The Ruins

Apr. 5 1:27 PM by Eater_of_Entrails

Based on a the horror novel by Scott Smith, who also wrote the screenplay, The Ruins is a harrowing tale about several American tourists vacationing south of the border who come across a monstrous evil living within the Mexican jungle. While not a masterpiece by any means, The Ruins is a satisfying horror film with enough gut-wrenching gore and genuine scares to please most horror fans.

If you thought Montezuma's diarrhea-inducing revenge was bad, wait to you see what's in The Ruins.

VIDEO GAME REVIEW: Condemned 2: Bloodshot (Xbox 360)

Mar. 26 11:27 AM by thefirstonetodie

It's been eleven grueling months since the Serial Killer X case, as well as the suspension and resignation of former SCU agent Ethan Thomas. After the events of Condemned: Criminal Origins, the only peace the ex-crime scene investigator can seem to find is at the bottom of a glass of whiskey -- and even then, he can't escape his hallucinations and nightmares. No, time hasn't been kind to Mister Thomas, but rest assured-it's only going to get much worse before it gets any better.

Yeah, Condemned 2 is this gross.

VIDEO GAME REVIEW: House of the Dead 2 & 3 Return (Wii)

Mar. 17 4:23 PM by thefirstonetodie

When it comes to zombies-based games, there's no doubt that Resident Evil is the king of the hill. But the House of the Dead franchise has been offering up sweet zombie busting action for a while now and even though it's just a retread of two classics, House of the Dead 2 & 3 Returns is a sweet package for Wii owners who want to blow off some steam by blasting the undead horde.

REVIEW: Doomsday

Mar. 15 5:21 PM by Blood_Bather

British writer/director Neil Marshall caught the eye of many a horror hound with his 2002 release of Dog Soldiers; a nice incursion into the werewolf subgenre. In 2005, his highly extolled follow up The Descent, about a deadly horde of mutated cave dwellers, gave Marshall the credibility to trump the often associated horror stigma; instead earning the regard as a top flight filmmaker, not only in his native U.K., but in Hollywood as well. Now Marshall tackles his most ambitious, mainstream effort in Doomsday; an over the top action spectacle about a post-apocalyptic dystopia set in the not so distant future.

REVIEW: Funny Games (2008)

Mar. 13 7:05 PM by Eater_of_Entrails

There's really nothing "funny" about Michael Haneke's Funny Games, a shot-for-shot remake of his profoundly disturbing 1997 film about a family that is terrorized by a couple of well-mannered psychopathic yuppies. Funny Games is nihilistic and vicious film that, while almost completely devoid of any gore, still manages to make you feel like you need to take a rape shower by the time it is through. It may be a bit strong for some viewers, but it's still one of most genuinely chilling films we've seen in a long time.

REVIEW: Diary of the Dead

Mar. 1 8:06 PM by Eater_of_Entrails

Don't believe the favorable reviews publications like Variety, Rolling Stone, and Premiere have given the fifth installment in the Dead film series. Diary of the Dead is not just the worst movie in George A. Romero' venerable zombie franchise (yes, it's worse than Land of the Dead... actually it's five trillion times worse than LotD), it's so unbelievably wretched that I walked away from the theater wanting to cry.

Wait, this imbecile is behind the camera? No wonder the movie blows.

REVIEW: Day of the Dead (2008)

Feb. 27 5:44 PM by Blood_Bather

George A. Romero is considered a horror god, some even going as far as to crown him the godfather of the modern day zombie subgenre. With his seminal achievement coming in 1968 with the groundbreaking, politically charged Night of the Living Dead, he's inspired countless copycats and imitations over the following four decades. Not only has Romero's films been flat out cribbed, but he's happily lent his blessing toward remakes of his original titles. In 1990, Tom Savini remade Night of the Living Dead; a practically bloodless version created by a man responsible for some of the most gruesome and graphic depictions of on screen violence (Savini is an all world make-up artist). Zack Snyder (Of 300 Fame), in 2004, offered an impressive rendition of arguably Romero's best zombie film: Dawn of the Dead. Snyder flipped the script on zombie conventions, making them animated, hyper-ambulant and thereby truly menacing. Cut to the now, 2008, where Steve Miner, no horror stranger at all (director of Friday the 13th parts II & III), desperately tries to keep the trend alive...or dead?!? Day of the Dead, that is!
